Making homemade pie
My family loves pie and it’s always the go to dessert in the summertime and all holiday. As much as I love to bake, I have only made one pie, an apple one, last fall. Saturday we were at the farmers Market and we came across marrionvberries. I grew up in the valley and these sweet/tart berries were everywhere. We grew them in our backyard! I haven’t come across them after moving to Portland so I was pretty excited to see them. Before I knew it I excitedly exclaimed “buy the whole flat, I’ll bake a pie!” Oops. I had committed myself to a task I wasn’t sure I was up for. I found my recipe for an all butter pie dough and realized it was going to take hours, mostly just letting things chill, but still hours. I put my reservations to the side and got to work. The pie smelled amazing as it was baking and since it was made later in the day by the time we were ready for dessert that evening the pie was still nicely warm and tasted absolutely delicious. Like the best berry pie! I laughed at my imperfect crust, about how homemade and rudimentary it looked, but that’s exactly what I found beautiful about it.
